Cronyx-Tau is a high speed (up to 4 Mbps) ISA Bus Master
synchronous/asynchronous multiplexer that allows to connect IBM PC and
compatible computers to the modern communication equipment such as HDSL or
Fiber Optic modems. Its options include sophisticated interfaces for direct
connection to G.703 (2048 kbps) communication channels or E1 Fractional
services (see Chapters "Short Range Modems" and "Digital Service Access
Devices".)
The key element of Cronyx-Tau is HD64570 controller chip (a product of Hitachi Corp., Japan). Interface options cover RS-232, V.35, RS-530 (RS-449), G.703 (2048 kbps) and E1 standards. The adapter is software-configurable. Only I/O Base Address is jumper selectable.
The Cronyx-Tau software allows to join several physical synchronous communication channels into one logical channel. For example, two channels with data rate 2 Mbps, joined together, will create the logical channel with the overall throughput of 4 Mbps.
